Event objectives

  • To convert organic waste, particularly food Scraps, dry leaves, flowers & paper into vermicompost.
  • Students will be able to compost in a limited space & describe the composting process.
  • Students will get the employment.
  • They can generate employments.
  • They will turn towards organic farming & contribute for food security.

Event briefs

  1. The Context:
  • Because of excessive use of inorganic fertilizers, pesticides we are losing our quality soil at a alarming rate. So as to restore the richness & fertility of the soil vermicompost is the only total eco-friendly Solution.
  1. The Practice:
  • We have started Certificate course in Vermicomposting Technology for our college students from the session 2022-23. A vermicomposting unit was installed & inaugurated by the hands of our Principal Prof. Ishwar Mohurley sir.
  • Two composting tanks of (12 Ft. x 4 Ft) size were constructed to process the organic biodegradable waste.
  • Organic waste material (dry leaves, flowers & paper) was collected by the course students from the college campus & filled the composting tank.
  • After that by taking all the precautions earthworms were released in to the same tank.
  • First batch of 17 students were admitted for the course (15th December 2022 to 15th March 2023).
  • Students were trained through theory as well as practically.
  • After completion of the vermicomposting process the resultant product i.e. vermicompost is applied to the garden plants in the campus.
  1. Resources Required:-  
  •  Composting tanks, food Scraps, dry leaves, flowers, partly decomposed cow dung, earthworms.

Event outcomes

  • We have successfully completed the first cycle of composting.
  • organic waste of the college premise was used for the production of vermicompost
  • About 500 Kg of vermicompost was harvested
  • 30 students completed the certificate course
  • Many farmers and students aware about the vermicomposting technology
